The dimensional weight formula

Dimensional weight is calculated as:

DIM Weight = (Length × Width × Height) ÷ DIM Divisor

Each dimension is measured in inches and rounded up to the next whole inch before multiplying — a package measuring 12.2" is treated as 13" for this calculation. The result is a weight in pounds. Carriers then bill you based on whichever number is larger: your package's real weight on a scale, or its calculated dimensional weight.

A worked example

Take a box measuring 14″ × 12″ × 10″ containing an item that actually weighs 5 lb, shipped with a carrier using the current 139 divisor.

Step 1: Each dimension is already a whole number, so no rounding is needed: 14 × 12 × 10 = 1,680 cubic inches
Step 2: 1,680 ÷ 139 ≈ 12.1, rounded up to 13 lb
Result: You're billed for 13 lb, not 5 lb — because the box's size, not its contents, sets the price.

DIM divisors by carrier

As of July 12, 2026, USPS, UPS, and FedEx all use a divisor of 139 for standard ground and parcel services — USPS previously used a more forgiving divisor of 166, which meant lighter dimensional weight for the same box. That USPS advantage on bulky, lightweight packages has now largely closed. One meaningful difference remains: USPS only applies dimensional pricing to packages larger than 1,728 cubic inches (1 cubic foot); anything smaller is billed at actual weight regardless of shape. UPS and FedEx apply dimensional weight calculations to packages of any size. Divisors and thresholds can change — always confirm the current figures directly with your carrier or shipping software before finalizing a rate estimate.

  • Measure the outer dimensions of your actual shipping box, not the product itself.
  • Keep 2–3 box sizes on hand instead of one oversized box for everything.
